FOURTH AND FIFTH GRADE G/T MATHEMATICS PROGRAM
The Gifted and Talented Mathematics Program includes acceleration of skills and concepts and enrichment of the content. The program is designed for fourth and fifth grade students who have been identified as needing mathematics instruction beyond the scope provided by the regular elementary mathematics essential curriculum.
Math instruction will be based upon new curriculum aligned with Common Core Standards. The mathematics program includes problem solving, reasoning, connections, basic facts and computation, number sense, estimation, and mental computation. Appropriate use of calculators is emphasized throughout the year. Writing as a means of communicating students’ thinking processes is incorporated on a weekly basis.
To participate in the 4/5 G/T Mathematics Program, students must be tested. Students are nominated for testing by teachers or parents, and testing occurs during the month of February prior to the coming school year. Students new to HCPSS may be nominated and tested upon registration in the school. The test used to determine eligibility is the School and College Ability Test (SCAT). Additional indicators of outstanding performance in mathematics may also be considered when determining student placement.
